Local Government Elections (visit www.kelowna.ca for all of the voting information below)

The next general election is November 15th, 2008.

In B.C. general local elections are held every three years. In Kelowna these include the election of a Mayor and eight Councillors to City Council, and the election of four School Trustees to the Board of School District No. 23.  Elections are conducted according to the rules and regulations set out in the Local Government Act, which governs local government elections throughout B.C.

The City of Kelowna uses electronic voting machines. Voting for candidates is still done by hand, on specially prepared ballots, but the vote counting is done electronically. Manual counts of each and every vote are no longer required, which means the vote tally can be calculated within minutes of the final voter casting his or her ballot. Unofficial city-wide results are usually available within an hour of the close of polls. The paper ballots are still retained in the event that a recount, whether electronic or manual, is required.

Special Voting

Special voting is provided at certain residential care facilities in Kelowna, and at Kelowna General Hospital. The purpose of the special voting is to provide the opportunity to vote to the residents and staff of those facilities who would not otherwise be able to do so. Special voting is not open to the general public.

Special voting at the Kelowna General Hospital will take place on general voting day, November 15, 2008 (with voting hours shorter than at general voting locations). Special voting at other locations is arranged individually with those facilities and takes place at specified dates and times in the days leading up to general voting day.

Notices are posted around the end of October at the facilities themselves, as well as in the newspapers, adivisng when and where special voting opportunities will take place.
